GHRP-6: What It Is and Its U.S. Regulatory Status

What is GHRP-6?

GHRP-6 stands for growth hormone-releasing peptide-6. It is a synthetic peptide made of six amino acids and was one of the first compounds in its class, developed in the 1980s. It acts on the ghrelin receptor, which signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone.

GHRP-6 was an early research tool. Work on it and related compounds helped lead to the discovery of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor and, later, of ghrelin, a hormone made mainly in the stomach.

U.S. regulatory status

Current status: Not FDA-approved.

GHRP-6 is not the active ingredient in any FDA-approved medicine, and the FDA has not found it safe and effective for any use in people.

Growth hormone-releasing peptides, including GHRP-6, are prohibited in competitive sport under the World Anti-Doping Code.
