Gonadorelin: What It Is and Its U.S. Regulatory Status

What is gonadorelin?

Gonadorelin is a synthetic peptide with the same ten-amino-acid sequence as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH is made in the hypothalamus and signals the pituitary gland to release two reproductive hormones, LH and FSH.

Gonadorelin has a long history in medicine, including use as a diagnostic agent to test how well the pituitary gland responds to GnRH.

U.S. regulatory status

Current status: Prescription drug (Rx only).

This means gonadorelin may only be dispensed with a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. It is not an over-the-counter product, and it is not a supplement.

GnRH and related releasing factors are also prohibited for male athletes under the World Anti-Doping Code.
