LL-37 is a naturally occurring human peptide made of 37 amino acids. Its name comes from the first two amino acids in its chain, both leucine (L), and its length. It is the only member of the cathelicidin family of antimicrobial peptides found in humans.
The body makes LL-37 by cutting it from a larger precursor protein called hCAP18. It is produced by immune cells and by cells lining the skin, airways and gut, and it is part of the innate immune system, the body’s first line of defense.
Current status: Not FDA-approved.
In practical terms, LL-37 has not gone through the FDA review that a drug must pass before it can be marketed for use in people. There is no FDA-approved product that contains it.
LL-37 is widely studied in laboratory research, but that research does not make it an approved medicine.
