Mazdutide: What It Is and Its U.S. Regulatory Status

What is mazdutide?

Mazdutide is a synthetic peptide that activates two hormone receptors: the GLP-1 receptor and the glucagon receptor. GLP-1 is a gut hormone released after eating, and glucagon is a pancreatic hormone involved in blood sugar and energy balance. Compounds that act on both are called dual agonists.

Mazdutide has been developed mainly in China, where it has been studied in clinical trials for weight management and type 2 diabetes and has received regulatory approval.

U.S. regulatory status

Current status: Investigational – not FDA-approved.

Investigational means mazdutide has been tested in clinical research but has not been approved by the FDA. It is not available as a prescription medicine in the United States.

Approval in China does not carry over to the United States. A drug must be approved by the FDA before it can be marketed to U.S. patients.
