Ipamorelin is a synthetic peptide made of five amino acids. It belongs to a group called growth hormone secretagogues, which act on the ghrelin receptor and signal the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. It was developed in the 1990s and is described as more selective than earlier compounds in this group.
Ipamorelin has been studied in clinical trials for postoperative ileus, a slowdown of normal bowel function after surgery. It was not approved for that or any other use.

Growth hormone secretagogues, including ipamorelin, are also prohibited in competitive sport under the World Anti-Doping Code.
