What is tesamorelin?

Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide modeled on growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), a hormone made by the hypothalamus. GHRH signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone, so tesamorelin is classed as a GHRH analog.

U.S. regulatory status

Current status: FDA-approved prescription drug (Rx only).

This means the FDA has reviewed and approved at least one product containing tesamorelin for specific uses, and it can only be dispensed with a valid prescription. The approval covers the approved product itself. It does not extend to unapproved products sold under the same name.

Brand names and approved use

In the United States, tesamorelin is marketed under the Egrifta brand name. It is approved for one specific purpose: reducing excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV who have lipodystrophy, a condition that changes how the body stores fat. It is not approved for general weight loss or for other uses.
